Day 1 – Journey to Gheralta, Maryam Korkor & Sunset Views
Begin the adventure from Mekelle with a scenic drive toward the Gheralta mountain region. The road passes through the beautiful landscapes of Tigray: dry plains, village scenery, sandstone cliffs, and dramatic mountain formations.
Upon arrival, meet the local guide and begin the first trekking experience toward one of Gheralta’s famous rock-hewn churches. A recommended first-day experience is Maryam Korkor, one of the most beautiful churches in the region. The hike offers wide views over the Gheralta plains and a peaceful introduction to the spiritual atmosphere of the area.

Day 2 – Abuna Yemata Guh Adventure & Return to Mekelle
Today is the highlight of the Gheralta adventure. After breakfast, begin the trek toward Abuna Yemata Guh, one of Ethiopia’s most iconic cliff churches. The route is adventurous and dramatic, involving hiking, scrambling, and climbing sections before reaching the church carved high into the cliff face.
Inside the church, travelers can see ancient religious paintings, peaceful sacred spaces, and one of the most powerful views in Ethiopia. This experience is best for adventurous travelers who are comfortable with heights and active hiking.
Experiences: Morning drive or transfer to Abuna Yemata Guh trailhead, guided hike and climb toward the cliff church, one of Ethiopia’s most dramatic adventure routes, Abuna Yemata Guh rock-hewn church, ancient paintings, sacred interiors, breathtaking cliffside views, final photography moments in Gheralta, and drive back to Mekelle.
